Making Great Readers
We are very excited about implementing a new pre-reading program at SPUMCWS called Making Great Readers. The program will be launched in all classes (excluding the PMO class) this fall. Our Weekday School will be the first school in Gaston County to use this fantastic program. This program was developed by Wallace Howard. This is a developmentally ready, teacher-directed, kinesthetic approach to the sound letter connection.
Literature Based Curriculum
The new Stepping Stones Class will use a literature based curriculum in conjunction with the Making Great Readers Program. In the early childhood classroom, some of the best lessons are born of fun and fanciful, or true and touching, children’s literature. All subjects and basic skills are centered around literature and integrated throughout the curriculum. Many opportunities and experiences are given to the children to read and write.
Thematic Based Curriculum
Thematic instruction is based on the idea that people acquire knowledge best when learning in the context of a coherent “whole,” and when they can connect what they’re learning to the real world. Thematic instruction seeks to put the teaching of cognitive skills such as reading, mathematics, science, and writing in the context of a real-world subject that is both specific enough to be practical, and broad enough to allow creative exploration. We use whole group, as well as small group activities and individualized instruction. A variety of learning centers are available each day to enhance language development, socialization skills and creativity. Outdoor and indoor activities are planned to develop fine and gross motor skills, cognitive skills, independence and much more.
